Ekaterinburg also popularly know as Yekaterinburg is one of the 11 host cities for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Ekaterinburg is the fourth largest city in Russia and is the main administrative center in Ural Federal District of Russia. The city is located on the border of Europe and Asia, lying to the east of the Ural Mountains and 1,667 kilometers (1,036 mi) east of Moscow.

The city was founded by a Russian historian and an engineer in the year 1723 and the city is named after wife of Russian emperor Peter the Great, Yekaterina. It was one of the industrial cities of Russia at that time and was built with extensive use of iron. The residential buildings which were at the centre of a square plan were surrounded by fortified walls. Much of the credit for development of the entire Ural region goes to Yekaterinburg.
During the Soviet Era the city was named Sverdlovsk after the leader Yakov Sverdlov. After the World War II a number of technical institutions and factories were relocated to this city away from war-affected Moscow.
